Our story

The dreamcatcher is a protective talisman that is used to protect people from nightmares bad dreams and evil spirits. The outer ring of the dreamcatcher represents the circle of life. It is said that the soul of the sleeping person sees and hears various things hence one may have bad and good dreams. The web is meant to catch bad dreams and let the good ones filter through. The feathers hanging below the web are the soft path for good dreams to filter down into the individual’s mind. The dreamcatcher is traditionally made by the Native American mother for her newborn child to protect them from bad dreams, nightmares, and evil spirits.

I have always loved making things since I was a young child and have continued to make various things as a hobby until now. My passion for designing and creating all different kinds of dreamcatchers grew and grew to the point where I had to start decorating them around my home and then gift them to my family and friends. Finally, with the overflow of beautiful dreamcatchers I have stocked in my storage room, I knew what the next step I needed to take was and that was taking the plunge to start a small business. I wanted to spread the joy and love that the dreamcatchers gave my family, friends and I by sharing the love and protection with the community.

The dreamcatcher not only has the effect of protecting oneself from nightmares but can also be enjoyed as an interior décor.

I initially started renting out a space in a small little art gallery shop in Newtown (Beehive). This is where I displayed my work and sold accessories, cards, wreaths, and dreamcatchers that I had made. I loved displaying my work here but eventually grew to realise that I wanted to have connections with my customers who are supporting my business. I wanted to hear the good, the bad, and all of the in between about my products directly from the customer! Voices of joy, satisfaction, what they want and what they don’t. So through this experience of understanding, I wanted more direct contact with my customers. I opened up an online store “Dream Select”. The name Dream Select was inspired by the idea that you can select your favourite dreamcatcher online through my store.

My launch of the Dream Select online store like any new business was rocky, with not a huge explosion of sales but rather slow and steady sales. It was tough but what got me going was when in my first month of launching my store I had a customer who had emailed me after purchasing their dreamcatcher that she “no longer had scary dreams”. I was so happy that I got that message that I cried with joy, knowing that all my hard work and time paid off and that my customers get to experience my products positively! The same day I received an order from the same lovely lady wanting to purchase a couple of dreamcatchers to decorate her children’s room with!

Another customer ordered a personalised woven natural stone dreamcatcher with her birthstones decorated around the web. She had emailed me saying that she had hung her dreamcatcher on the rear view mirror of her car to protect her while driving. A week after, the same customer ordered 4 more of the smaller dreamcatcher charms to gift to her friends. All 4 woven with different birthstones, knitted with all my love.

These messages from my customers will continue to be my motivation! I am overwhelmed by the amount of love and support my customers have given me and therefore these kinds of messages and love I receive from my customers will continue to be my motivation to keep creating dreamcatchers!
